Unusual Order

Dunkin' 2026-09-16 Food I go to Dunks most mornings with my dog. Today, I did the same, but because K is out of town, I only ordered one coffee. I ended up with the wrong coffee (milk AND sugar, not almond milk, no sugar) and so was disappointed. It was my fault, though, and they usually give Imby a pup cup whenever we go in. So I can't…

Beautiful For Ever: Paint and Makeup in The Picture of Dorian Gray

I recently listened to an audiobook of The Picture of Dorian Gray and was pleased to find that it remains great. My prose expectations are tempered when I'm reading for the Hugos. There's…

I spent some time at the house of some friends from grad school, and we were discussing LLMs and poetry. Neal Stephenson

Goodreads · Read April 21, 2026

Not a flawless book, but an ambitious and enjoyable one. Biggest problem, as is often the case for our buddy Neal, is that he really doesn't know how to write women and honestly isn't all that interested in them. But the world he comes up with is so well-realized and thought through that I was really torn on 4 vs 5 stars -- but, you know, flawed.

Blue Remembered Earth (Poseidon's Children, #1)

Alastair Reynolds

Goodreads · Read April 21, 2026

Extremely imaginative and grand in scope, this novel establishes a whole world. Hard, heady science fiction that's as close to someone like Kim Stanley Robinson as you can get. Reynolds is very interested in seeing how different kinds of minds - and different ways of organizing society - might interact with one another. The series drags a bit as it goes on, but this one is awfully good.

Katabasis

R.F. Kuang

Goodreads · Read August 29, 2025

Maybe my least favorite of Kuang’s work to date despite being squarely in its audience. The bits about academia were, weirdly enough, not very compelling to me because they didn’t seem unique, even if some bits were very well drawn. There’s a description of enjoying the pub with one’s cohortmates that rang particularly true.

Some very good moments, and a final act that elevates what came before, bring it to 4 stars for me, but this following Yellowface makes me a bit worried that the author’s success has led her to think that she is the most interesting part of her books. This makes 2 books where the autobiographical elements are in their ascendence (3 if you count Babel, but it’s less there, I think), and I am hoping her next book ventures further afield. Still, a good book read in two sittings.

Saturation Point (Terrible Worlds: Transformations)

Adrian Tchaikovsky

Goodreads · Read June 16, 2025

A solid novella that's right down the middle as far as AT goes. I'm marking it lower than it deserves, probably, because it's a lot like quite a few other novels and novellas of AT's: a frustrated academic lands in an extraordinarily inhospitable environment filled with evolution run amok and it turns out there's some kind of Moreau thing going down. Good prose and good characterization here, though; I did LIKE it, but I think I'm going to need to start reading a different author soon. That said, I just finished SHROUD and it's one of my favorites, so maybe I just like some more than others!

One of the best of AT's "extremely hostile, alien environment, with humans trying to connect." Great planetary setting, and a great interplanetary setting, too -- the "Concern" is just sketched out enough to be interesting while still leaving a lot to the imagination.

Good stuff! Tchaikovsky has a few things he hits a lot - I think this is his third prison-camp-on-the-outskirts-of-civilization book I read this year - but he's just a sharp enough writer at a prose level and a clever enough writer at a conceptual level that it's usually a joy.

Didn't ultimately like this book much. The most compelling parts were the bits about how Quakers come to consensus, but the novel itself was just too slow, it took too long to get a sense of the characters, and the whole thing was just a bit too miserable for me. There wasn't a moment for characters to take a breath, really, so I didn't feel like I got much out of it from a character perspective, and the plot itself wasn't terribly gripping. Some good set pieces, though. I probably won't read anything else by Bennett, but if you really like Brandon Sanderson you'll probably like him.

Things are really cooking here. The elves make for a great villain, and the threat is convincing and interesting. Still fun, too. One of the better Witch books, though I think Carpe Jugulum is my favorite.

As good as this series gets, imo; if you don't like this one, don't keep reading, and if you do like this one you've got a whole bunch of other good books. As ever, Aaronovitch's control over his characters' voices is masterful, the plot propels, the world is charming, and the mystery works. I like it!

Liked this a bit better than the first in the series. Read it in San Diego while traveling, which gives it a nice flavor in my memory. Heavier on the will-they-won't-they romance than I usually go for (which is true for most of the series!), but I found it compelling (if a little bit repetitive in the dynamics of the relationship).

Five stars to the first 2/3, three stars to the last third. Good, chunky SF with big ideas and long chapters about orbital mechanics, which I liked. This is the Stephenson novel that feels most like a Kim Stanley Robinson novel, which I also liked. Just wasn't crazy about the last act.

Actually quite good! Things have picked up by this point. I do wish Sanderson had a _bit_ less angst, I find it kinda dull, and all of his characters kind of have the feeling of, like, Barbie dolls with faces drawn on in crayon, but the world is cool and the plot propels.

The Fountainhead

Ayn Rand

StoryGraph · Read

This sure was a book.

The good: I think Rand is actually underrated as a stylist. There are places where her writing is actually quite good - some really wonderful descriptions, especially (unsurprisingly) of buildings. The strawmanniness of her characters isn't so bad if you think about her writing in a tradition of Horatio Alger or even Dickens, and I think she's actually quite funny (usually despite herself). And there's still something appealing about that angle in the story - the first half of the novel does expound a positive, compelling philosophy on the dignity of human endeavor

The bad: Christ, do people in this book like to talk. Rand never met a sentence that she didn't want to be a paragraph, and a paragraph that didn't want to be a page. Rourke, the only terse character in the novel, finishes the book with a thirty page monologue. Given that characters are generally repetitively expounding either the Best or the Worst Philosophy, this gets extremely tiresome; by the end of the book, I was just grinding through to get it done.

And if you take it seriously as philosophy, it's extremely inconsistent in ways that I'm sure other folks have already broken down.

The ugly: This is for sure a hateful, cruel book. In particular, Rand hates:
* Women
* The disabled
* The poor
* Fat people - in fact, you can generally tell the moral worth of a character by the way they're described. Fat, chubby, jowly, or anything related = good. Stout could go either way.
* Those who inherit their wealth (this one is fine)
* Gertrude Stein specifically
* Did I mention women? Because she really, really hates women.

The Mimicking of Known Successes

Malka Older

StoryGraph · Read

I've thoroughly enjoyed Older's previous work, but the prose in this outing is a step above. Over and over again I found myself pausing, pleased, over particularly apt turns of phrase -- lines like "Mossa, appearing unmoved by her sartorial panache", feel natural in her characters' voices and are thoroughly enjoyable. The world is suggested rather than sketched (which makes sense for a novella) but is intriguing and exciting, the plot + stakes work, and the romance is engaging. Good stuff, strong recommendation!

Not a bad book, though not a great one. My main issue with it is the dialogue, which clanged a bit to my ear. The prose here is serviceable, like in The Lady Astronaut series, and it's a very readable book, but I left it feeling a bit dissatisfied.

That said, Gimlet is a great name for a service dog, which accounts for the fourth star here.

There's a lot to admire about it - and I enjoyed the audiobook I listened to! - but the character voices were pretty unconvincing in a lot of places, and the polymorphous perversity made me feel a bit like a square for reacting how I did (distaste). Erotically charged talking mooses and whatnot.

Yellowface

R.F. Kuang

StoryGraph · Read

Read review (contains spoilers)
Quite good! Read it in one go. It's funny, has a vivacious and sharp voice, and does some extremely clever and amusing things. It's stuck with me since I read it (which was admittedly only two days ago - it came out quite recently) and I find myself desperately wanting someone to talk to about it.

Some of the prose sings and a lot of it doesn't, which is the main demerit I have. I thought it was interesting, enjoyed the 'meta' quality of it, and thought it was finely sketched, but one of the challenges of writing from within the perspective of a limited author is that your prose doesn't have the space to sprout wings. With the space of a couple of days, I can say that _Yellowface_ is very good, but not quite as good as _Babel_ (for me). Still, I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book by Kuang.

Some spoilers:
One bit I thought was especially clever has to do with the status of _Yellowface_, the novel, within the world of the novel. We hear that Juniper is going to write this first-person novel that's going to tell-all, a confession, and we're led to believe that this is the book we're holding. All very nice, but the kicker comes when we meet Juniper's mother, who talks with awhat feels an awful lot like a Russian Jewish dialect. This, coupled with the namecheck to _Lolita_, which this novel more than passingly resembles, _and_ the thematic similarities to _Pale Fire_, another Nabokov novel, make me think that we're meant to understand _Yellowface_ itself as another, second 'plagiarism', albeit one that's a lot less loyal. To be clear, I thought this was good and funny.
